Raymond B. (Ray) Mitchell was elected a vice president of Alcoa in November 2006. He also serves as president of Alcoa Power and Propulsion, a business unit created through the combination of Alcoa Howmet and Alcoa Forged and Cast Products. This global business produces high-grade investment castings for aerospace and industrial gas turbines, and forgings for aerospace and industrial applications. It has 29 manufacturing facilities worldwide. Additionally, Ray is a member of Alcoa’s Employee Relations Council, a leadership team that provides strategic leadership on employee relations matters throughout the company’s U.S. operations.
Ray joined Alcoa in 1994 in the Corporate Development organization in Pittsburgh, responsible for several key joint ventures, acquisitions, and corporate divestitures. In 1997 he was named assistant controller, Financial Analysis and Planning, and in 1999 he became chief financial officer for Alcoa Europe, located in Geneva, Switzerland. Ray was appointed president of Alcoa Wheel and Forged Products in 2002. The business had 15 plants in six countries, producing forged aluminum wheels for the commercial truck and automotive industries, aircraft and military tanks. During this assignment, Ray also served as director of the Commercial Vehicle Market Sector, responsible for growing Alcoa’s position in this $7 billion global market. Ray was named to his current position in December 2004.
Prior to joining Alcoa, he was director of Finance, Large Scale Computing Division, for the IBM Corporation in Poughkeepsie, New York. His career at IBM spanned 12 years and included management positions in finance and business planning.
Ray is a 1980 graduate of Dickinson College where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics. He received an MBA degree in 1982 from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He is a member of the Financial Executive Institute.
Ray was born May 27, 1958 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Kathy, have two children.
