Alcoa’s 2008 Sustainability Report Details Commitment to Communities, Customers and Shareholders

NEW YORK–Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today the release of its 2008 Corporate
Sustainability Report, an annual account of the company’s global
environmental, social, and economic performance. The report is available
online in the sustainability section of Alcoa’s website at www.alcoa.com/sustainability

environment, health & safety. “Our 2008 Sustainability Report highlights
the significant advances that we have achieved and the goals that we
will continue to pursue during these difficult economic times and
beyond.”

Some noteworthy 2008 achievements include:

  • 75.9% of Alcoa locations had zero lost workdays and 44.4% of them had
    no recordable injuries;
  • The company achieved a 36% reduction in greenhouse gases from the 1990
    base year—a 44% improvement over the target reduction of 25% by 2010;
  • Approximately 90% of Alcoa’s worldwide operating locations have
    community programs, putting the company within reach of its target of
    100% by 2010; and
  • Alcoa was included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the
    seventh year in a row and named one of the most sustainable companies
    in the world at the World Economic Forum in Davos for the fifth
    consecutive year.

Also included in the Alcoa Sustainability Report is an independent
commentary by AccountAbility, a global, not-for-profit partnership
dedicated to thought leadership and advisory services focused on
sustainable development. Alcoa has worked with AccountAbility over the
last two years to improve the transparency and quality of its
sustainability reporting. Alcoa provided space for AccountAbility to
comment on the company’s sustainability reporting and to offer advice on
how Alcoa can continue to improve its reporting.
